Apart from the Milford Sound Lodge, there is one dining option in Milford Sound - the Blue Duck Cafe and Bar. It is ideal for a feast after doing the four-day Milford Track hike and they also have beer. There really is not much scope for eateries in the Sound, though, as most people are only here a short time.
There are plenty of places to eat in Queenstown and Wanaka, and many folks have a large breakfast before heading out on a flight-seeing tour. Queenstown comes with a wide range of restaurants, including traditional Kiwi, Thai and Japanese, and the seafood is particularly good.
What to Eat, and Where
You won't be spoilt for choice on restaurants in Milford Sound as there's only the one. This is a good thing though, as McDonalds and Starbucks in this part of the world would seriously defeat the object. The Blue Duck Cafe and Bar is just west of the cruise pier and does breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with snacks and beer. Some of the cruises also offer food.
Queenstown is loaded with places to eat and all are in a nice compact area, with everything within walking distance. You'll find everything from snack bars and fast food joints to good pub grub, BYO eateries and fine, full-service restaurants.
Queenstown is popular with seafood fanatics, especially for the local mussels and oysters, while the blue cod is also top-notch. New Zealand beef is widely regarded as one of the world's finest and is also readily available in Queenstown, Te Anau and Wanaka.
Te Anau is thin on the ground with restaurants, but has several cafés and similar dining options in the centre part of town. Backpackers tend to cook their own food in digs while awaiting treks.
